Here at Crockford towers we have always loved doing pre-wedding shoots. We like to build up a good relationship with all our wedding couples so that on the day we know what is important to them, and how they want their day to go.
The pre-wedding shoot (or engagement shoot) is a crucial part of building this relationship. We arrange our ‘PWS’ to happen a good few months before the wedding, and it is the perfect opportunity to get to know couples, for them to get to know us, and more importantly, to give them a chance to spend time in front of a camera together.
For many people getting married, the last professional photo they had taken was them at school or at university, sitting bolt upright against a mottled grey background, feeling self conscious.
A ‘PWS’ is a million miles away from this – it should be fun, relaxed and enjoyable. Most people feel a bit self conscious to begin with, but by the end are happy having their photos taken, which is perfect for us, as it means they will be confident on their wedding day.
So what does it involve? For me, I like to match up the couple with the shoot location, so we will meet up a park or somewhere more urban, or it could be somewhere which means a lot to the couple. I avoid using the wedding venue so that the ‘PWS’ photos and wedding photos are completely different. We spend a couple of hours wandering around, chatting about wedding plans, and taking pictures as we go, often stopping for a coffee part way through.
Afterwards, the couple will see the photos, so they can see how great they look, and also choose an image for signing boards or signing books if they want one. We also give them a little secret gift for their wedding (but shhhhh don’t tell anyone), but the biggest bonus is the confidence they have in me and themselves.
So, for us at James Crockford Photography, a ‘PWS’ is such a vital part of the process, I wouldn’t want to do a wedding without one…
