Picture Perfect Twitter Pics

We’re all guilty of it – we sign up to Facebook and in a bid to keep our page nice and friendly and fun, we post images on our status pic of us on holiday, of us as a cartoon hero, of us in mid drink/eat/fall-over and even as photographers, here at James Crockford we do it too. But…here’s where our toleration of fun ‘snaps’ ends and our bug-bear begins!

For other forms of social media, i.e Twitter, LinkedIn, E-Cademy it’s just not suitable to post this kind of image and have it be the first point of reference for potential clients, networkers and employers. Yes we all have a life outside of work, but let’s try keeping the two separate shall we?

Not wishing to sound all ‘bah humbug’ about it, there is method in our outburst. To get the very best from your social media activity, naturally you would use each platform differently, your status should be targeted and worded to attract that particular market, for example in the case of photographers, we use Facebook to show sneaky peaks of our latest shoots, chat to brides who are organising their wedding, students about their birthday parties or their student band’s first album cover; and for LinkedIn, we talk to corporate companies about their staff photography needs. Therefore the picture that introduces you to these people should also work for you and not show them what you get up to at your mate’s ‘all you can drink’ birthday party!

Businesses need photography for all sorts of reasons, from the staff portrait to the team shot and now, more often we are getting asked to include images of each employee for their social media pages.

So if you are updating your LinkedIn later and happen to notice a friend or colleague wearing a silly party hat or looking slightly tanned with a large beer in one hand, or worst still no picture at all – do us a favour – tell them about us!

Couldn’t agree more. Which is why my website profile uses a professional black and white shot from yours truly!
