Here at James Crockford headquarters, we are lucky enough to share our work space with some great local businesses including the talents of one Andy Hartwell, managing director for Substrakt Ltd, a digital media and design agency. We’ll explain more about Andy and his business in another blog, but for this one we want to introduce you to Andy’s dog…DAVE!
We’ve spoken before about the growing number of business people that bring their pets to work and Dave is a regular visitor to the offices at Fazeley Studios and we absolutely love him being around.
We spoke to Andy (thought it best to, as Dave can’t really comment other than to wag his tail and sniff in inappropriate places) about his relationship with this particular man’s best friend.
Tell us a bit about your dog Andy…Dave is a 10-month old Golden Retriever we’ve had since he was a 2-month old puppy.
Why do you choose to bring Dave to work with you? I’d rather have him here at work than leave him at home. One of key reasons for getting a dog was the fact I could have him at work with me.
How does Dave affect the office environment, the staff, the visitors etc? It’s a good opportunity to take a little down time and play with Dave and it adds to our existing fairly relaxed office atmosphere. Most visitors seem to love him, although we always ask before people arrive and he has a little crate that he sleeps in if he’s not behaving or welcome at particular meetings.
Do you have a favourite picture of Dave, you can share with us? There are two favourites, Dave on his first night with us (Ed…heartmelting!) and in the office (although there is now a strict rule that he is not allowed on the sofa!)

Now just a bit more about photography if you don’t mind…How important is photography to your work? We do a fair amount of photography with our work, mostly taking shots of print work we produce for portfolios. So yes, it’s very important.
And in your personal life? Very important. Both my fiance and I enjoy taking pictures and documenting any trips or special occasions.
Would you have a photography session with Dave?
Yes, although it would have to be very natural rather than posed, I don’t think Dave is capable of sitting still for too long!
