Wow – what an incredible day. Kat has been ready to give birth for a few weeks now, with an actual due date of the 30th Aug. As Josh was two weeks early, we foolishly thought that Bump 2 would be early as well. When there was no sign we started to get more impatient, and once the EDD had passed we were starting to get worried that we might go past the homebirth date window.
As it turns out, we needn’t have worried. At 02.30 this morning (6th Sept) Kat started having contractions, and like Josh’s labour they came every two minutes from the start (all timed using an awesome iPhone application which times contraction intervals and duration!), so at 04.00 we decided to call the midwives who came out in about half an hour.
Although she was strapped up to the TENS machine Kat was keen to start puffing away on the Entonox, but they first had to work out how far along she was. We were taken a bit by surprise to find out that she was already at 7cm (for those in the know about these sort of things!), so my pumping up and filling of the birth pool cranked up a gear. As it turned out the pool wasn’t up that long before the arrival, and there was a point where I was a wee bit concerned that the baby would arrive before the water was in there…
Thankfully, Kat was able to get into the pool and stayed there until she actually delivered (for Josh’s labour the pool was slowing things down too much so had to get out), and we were really lucky that Josh slept the whole way through, so Carol (Kat’s mother who has been tirelessly helping us out and looking after Josh) was also able to be there for the birth which was lovely.
So, Joseph was born at 06.03, weighing 3.7kg (8lb 2oz) after a very straight forward labour. Kat was awesome – she never fails to amaze me how good she looked after both births, and was so relaxed throughout, and by 07.30 the midwives had gone and it was all over, and we were left with a beautiful new baby boy.
We had already thought about using the name Joseph (and no we didn’t just choose it because it was next to Joshua in our baby name book), and decided to give him Harker as a middle name (which is Carol’s mother’s maiden name).
We were also delighted to hear that Joseph shares a birthday with Sue and Rob’s grandson, Alfie (Sue is Kat’s Godmother). Congratulations to Nick and Tara – he certainly made you guys wait for it!
I must say a big thank you to Cressida for looking after Josh today, I am so grateful to Carol for all her support over the past three weeks, and I am so incredibly proud of Kat for producing another beautiful child. You are awesome my love.
More photos to follow, but this is our lovely Joseph:
